Lecture:
The lecturer Dr Helen Cripps talks the online libraries and database, she explains why use online libraries and database She talks about the disadvantages of using online libraries and database and types of online libraries and database. We were shown the examples of online resources and the limitations of online libraries and lastly the referencing online libraries and the ways of online referencing are;
• Accurate referencing is vital
• Use APA format
• Details found in ECU library publications
• Create Endnote Libraries
• In many courses, marks are deducted from assignments with incorrect referencing
• The quantity of references may also be evaluated and contribute to your mark
Basically there was allot of things that Dr Helen Cripps have covered that was good and I have gained allot of knowledge from it.
Tutorial:
In class we had Log onto and explore the ECU Library Service. Spend some time going through and we had to list 10 things and explain them in detail, and the ones i have found was;
1. Journals- This link helps students search for an article for their topic
2. MetaQuest is an access entry for library databases that can search up to 10 databases at the same time
3. Search terms- you can search what type of thing you looking for example whatever topic you want
4. Reference/ Enquires-All four ECU libraries offer a general reference desk service. For basic enquiries you can call at the Enquiries Desk, and for more in-depth reference queries call at the Reference/Information Desk.
5. Academic tip sheets- it gives informations on Academic essay, Annotated bibliography, APA Style, Blogs, journals et al. , assignments etc.
6. Library work shop and tours-students can request for library tour to the time it is suited for them.
7. Getting started at the library- is basically is; you can get Help at The library, Contacts for Assistance, Finding Material example books, journal articles etc.
8. Library broadcast video clips-Podcasts are audio files that can be downloaded and played on your MP3 player, or through your PC. ECU library's podcasts include audio tours of each metro campus library, as well as information about using your ECU library.
9. ECU referencing guide- Gives you examples on how to reference an academic way of writing your essay, annoted bibliography etc
10 simo- where student can check their timetables, exam progress, govt. assistance, fee details, statement of account, govt. confirmation etc
On the next work that we had to look at were to go on this website www.medlineplus.gov
And to have a look through the pages and find something that would interests us and I looked at garlic (Allium sativum L.) this article here talks about Some have examined the effects of oral garlic on serum lipids the evidence the have come up with was High cholesterol, Cancer, Anti-fungal (applied to the skin), High blood pressure, Tick repellent etc.
Readings
READING 1. The reading resource "Bones" is a website formed as part of an extension from the Beaufort University Library Resources. Similarly to my top 10 tips for searching the Internet, it shows useful tips to search Internet Search engines effectively.
READING 2. Reading two is an article which features how to search the web. Written by Bill Thompson, BBC commentator for "Go Digital", he talks about needing to use the versatility of the web, and not just using the same search engines such as google for all queries. The research he does is often not in books yet, so the use of the internet is unavoiable, though he underlines that its important that if using the internet as a resource, you make sense of what you find, and that you are wary that the information that you are reading may not be credible. Bill Thompson also talks about using resources such as medline, which are accessed via th internet but arent indexed by search engines.One of the problems he underlines, is that the web is already huge and only getting larger by the minute, so it would be impossible for the search engine that you most regularly use to index and contain all the information that is available to you. Much of the information is hidden behind firewalls and is available to those only who hold subscriptions, much like the ECU website. He counters that this problem can be solved by using resources such as this is to have a wide and varied use of search engines, subscriptions and online journals.
